The impact of cultural competence education on care quality and outcomes: Insights from the Violet research team.

In this study, providers completing Violet’s targeted training initiatives showed better patient outcomes.

In 2022, Violet established a partnership with a mid-sized direct-to-employer medical provider, with the goal of growing the inclusivity of their care team. Together, they aimed to determine whether culturally competent care led to improved patient outcomes and to evaluate the effectiveness of targeted educational interventions in enhancing providers’ cultural responsiveness.

Violet specializes in benchmarking and improving cultural competence among health care providers, focusing on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), LGBQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer), and TGNC (Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming) communities. We used our proprietary framework to assess the cultural competence of the organization’s clinicians in delivering care to these culturally diverse communities.

To upskill the clinicians, Violet developed a custom educational pathway that incorporated foundational and advanced topics from Violet’s curriculum. The initiative dedicated six hours of focused training time to ensure thorough engagement.

Methodology and analysis.

The study involved 110 out of 117 providers who were benchmarked for cultural competence. A subsample of 52 primary care providers, including MDs, NPs, and PAs, participated in the detailed analysis, which covered tens of thousands of patient appointments and records.

The primary analysis, the impact of the education program was evaluated on key patient outcomes.

For the secondary analysis, providers were categorized based on their achievement of Violet Benchmarks: 1) Benchmark Achievers: Providers who reached the “Awareness” level or above, 2) Non-Achievers: Providers who did not earn a Violet Benchmark.

Key findings.

Providers engaged in Violet’s education curriculum showed:

  • 5 additional appointments attended per provider
  • 20% higher depression screening rates per clinician
  • 16% improvement in hypertension control per clinician
  • 0.4% improvement in diabetes management per clinician

Providers who achieved Violet Benchmarks demonstrated:

  • 1.4% higher appointment adherence
  • 4% higher completion rates for wellness visits
  • 4% higher rates of depression screenings and follow-ups

This partnership is further evidence of the profound impact cultural competence has on care delivery. By investing in comprehensive training and ongoing education, the organization successfully showed enhanced patient engagement and health outcomes. These findings were across all patient communities, showing that culturally competent care is good care for all patients. .

We’re committed to continuing our efforts to foster inclusivity in health care. Our ongoing collaboration aims to leverage data-driven insights and targeted education to ensure that all patients receive high-quality, culturally responsive care.
